Chalk Markers Review

Stardom Brands Liquid Chalk Marker Review

As a blogger, I am offered some amazing opportunities to review products.  Stardom Crafts offered me a FREE set of their Liquid Chalk Markers Mega Pack in exchange for an honest review. This has been one of the most fun reviews I have done! I love these chalk markers and plan to use them a lot in the future.

These liquid chalk markers are amazing. First of all there are a lot of them! 18 markers. Most other packs I have seen come either only with 8 or 10 markers, so you get an great value with this Mega Pack. The colors are bright and once the liquid is completely into the tip (within a few seconds) they create a wonderful solid line.

These markers write on many surfaces. Chalk boards, mirrors, metal, glass. It just needs to be non-porous. If you're not sure it will work on your surface test in a small area before continuing.

  • An amazing feature of these markers is that the tip is reversible so you can choose whether you want a bold or a finer line by choosing the chisel or bullet side of the tip. Great for creating a professional look to your chalk work.
  • These are easy to use. Unlike regular chalk, they are completely dust free! No smudging and mess.
  • The markers are water based for easy clean up and are non-toxic. They are safe for the environment and for anyone 3 and up.
  • 90 day money back guarantee. If you don't love your liquid chalk markers Stardom Brands will refund your money no questions asked.

Creating beautiful designs and writing messages with chalk is so much easier with these fabulous markers. They are perfect for business or a budding artist. Check out what I made with them.

Had to clean all of the nasty chalk dust off the board from using regular chalk.

I took a few minutes to shake each marker and get the liquid into the tips (a few seconds for each one).

Started playing!

These markers are amazing! Super easy to use, the liquid flows nice and evenly and cleans up quickly with water. My new favorite!!!

Perfect for summer :)

6 Piece Canning Set Review

I am still learning when it comes to canning but I religiously make freezer jam every year and this year I am determined to try more fun things! Through Tomoson, the SKG Group offered me this Bellemain 6 Piece Canning Set for FREE in exchange for my honest review.

All the pieces in the step are handy for each step in the canning process from sterilizing, to filling, to sealing the jars.

The Set includes 6 pieces:
  • Funnel
  • Jar Lifter
  • Magnetic Lid Lifter
  • Tongs
  • Bubble Popper/Measuring Stick
  • Lid Remover Wrench
All the metal tools have a vinyl coating for a better grip and are stainless steel. They will last longer and are easy to care for.

The entire set is dishwasher safe!

If you are new to canning like me or an expert, having good tool makes the process easier and safer.

The Wide mouth funnel is made of heavy-duty plastic and will work with both standard and wide mouth jars. Vent notches help foods flow through the funnel quicker and the thumb grip is perfect for keeping your hands clean.

The Jar lifter is a scissor action tool that helps safely lift any size canning jars out of boiling water. This is important for minimizing the risk of burns and potential jar breakages. The vinyl coating on the lifters offers a more secure grip while handling hot jars.

Removing lids from a boiling sterilization bath can be tricky. The Magnetic Lid Lifter removes the danger of burning hands and with the touch of the magnet to a lid allows you to lift if out of the boiling water, place on the jar keeping it perfectly sterile during the canning process.

To move food around inside the jars or to move jars around inside the canning bath, the tongs will keep your hands away from boiling hot liquids. The vinyl coating on the handles in addition to the texture nodes on the grabbing end aid in a better grip at both ends of the tongs.

The bubble popper/measuring stick is a heat-resistant plastic wand that makes removing bubbles from processed jars easy before putting on the lids. There are measurement marks on the other end to make sure that filled jars have the proper amount of "head room."

Tightening lids on hot jars can be hard on hands and fingers. The heat-resistant vinyl cushioning on the lid remover wrench helps protect jars from breaking as well as your fingers from burning while you tighten the outer lid rings. Once the seal is complete, it can be used to remove the rings for reuse and to extend their life.

This set is great quality and has all the essentials for canning.

Zester/Grater Review

So, ya'll know I'm a sucker for anything in the kitchen. I love baking and I love making new recipes. So, when Tomoson gave me the opportunity to work with Smarty Pants Supplies and get their #1 Best Premium Zester/Grater for FREE in exchange for my honest review, I accepted without hesitation.

When I moved last summer I lost my old zester and I didn't realize how much I loved it until I didn't have one any more. These zester/grater's are perfect for zesting citrus, grating cheese, chocolate, cinnamon, spices, and nuts.

It has a sharp stainless steel blade with a cover.

Add Flavor in Seconds!
  • Grate Parmesan over soups and salads
  • Add chocolate garnish to a chocolate drizzled dessert
  • Add garlic and peppers to homemade guacamole
  • Grate lemons, limes, and oranges to add zest to pesto, dressing, desserts...
  • Create a marinade for seafood, chicken, and meat with fresh spices and flavors
Safe, Easy to Use and Clean up!
  • Super thick handle for a safe, comfortable grip
  • Plastic snap on cover to protect blade during storage
  • Extra long, 8" stainless steel blade means zest is perfect every time
  • Dishwasher safe for easy clean up
  • Durable and built-to-last design is backed by a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee

I totally love this! The blades are sharp, cut evenly and consistently and cleans up great in the dishwasher.

The first time I remembered to actually take pictures using my zester was while making homemade Raspberry Lemonade Cupcakes. Since the base cupcake recipe was borrowed from a good friend I wont post it but I will be creating something fabulous from it in the future :)

The zest came off easily and clean without getting to the pith. It added amazing flavor to the cupcake batter and to the raspberries for the frosting.

Yummo!

What do you think of my cute little gifts?

The Ultimate Treasure Quest 1: The Jewel of Peru: Book Review

As a Tomoson Blogger, I get the opportunity to read and review books for FREE!
When I saw this I thought it would be great to read with my boys, after all it has a ship and an ultimate treasure quest!

I gave this book a rating of 3 stars.

After claiming his father's abandoned ship, young Christopher finds himself prematurely as the new Captain.  His first mate stumbles upon group of orphaned castaways from all over the world who quickly befriend Christopher and join in his quest to find his missing parents by following the clues from the magical Ultimate Treasure Chest.

The quest leads them from 18th century England through the Bermuda Triangle where they pass through an eerie green fog and mysteriously arrive in modern day Peru. The misfit group travels around the beautiful country and talk to the local people, learning about their way of life and the struggles they are facing.  It is their job to not only follow the map but to use their unique talents individually and as a group to help the communities they pass along the way; all the while trying to avoid a relentless band of pirates and a corrupt businessman.

This book had so much potential.  The story idea was fun and interesting.  There was plenty of action and adventure.  It was a unique twist on Time travel, taking the characters from the past to the present instead of to the past or some fictitious future.  The author shared her knowledge of geology, history, and geography throughout the story and developed some great teaching moments.  It even had a feel of a virtual vacation to amazing landmarks in the country.  My biggest issue with the story, is the delivery.

Some of the teaching moments felt forced and not an essential part of the story.  The rhymes in the clues seemed to spell out exactly what the author wanted the reader to learn instead of letting them naturally find the answer through the reading.  I found some of the description lacking and was confused as to who the target audience was supposed to be.  There is a wide array of character ages and the content of the story seems somewhat advanced yet it is written very simply with very stereotypical dialogue. I felt that the story could have been more fully developed and been an excellent read.  I can usually dive right into a book with themes like this one and fly right through it, but I had a hard time staying focused while I was reading. I started reading this book out loud to my two boys (8 & 10), but they lost interest after the first few chapters and I finished reading it on my own.

I learned a lot about the ecological and environmental issues facing Peru, and I have a renewed appreciation for the rain forest and the industrial issues that affect not only the flora and fauna of the beautiful country but the people and communities who call it their home.  I also learned more about gemstones than I had ever had an interest in doing before.  Using the gem coins as power sources was an interesting way to tie in yet another educational factor to the story.

I think this book would be successful in a group/educational setting. As a stand alone free time or bedtime reader, it is not something I will read again.

*I received a copy of this book for free, but the opinions and comments I expressed are my own.

Leo Superhero: Book Review

As a Tomoson Blogger, I get the opportunity to read and review books for FREE!
This book quickly caught my attention and I looked forward to reading Leo Superhero.

I rated this book 4 out of 5 stars.

All little kids love to use their imagination and what little boy doesn't want to be a superhero? This cute little story tells of a Sunday morning adventure of one such superhero with his sidekick milkshake the cat.  As Leo goes on an early morning mission donned in his homemade superhero suit, he has to have patience, share, and show his love for others before he can get back in bed before the family wakes up.

The pictures in this book are so fun! They are bright and colorful and told as much of the story as the words. It was the fabulous pictures that helped me decide to give this book 4 instead of 3 stars.

The story is simple enough to keep young readers and listeners entertained throughout the entire story, however older readers may loose interest.

I love that this book was written by authors with children who wanted to write books for them that would be a good learning experience.  This book will leave your child feeling good and ready to be a helper.

Interview:

Miss Colleen, can you give us an insiders look at how your book came to be?

I have always been interested characters that lurk behind the scenes - villains, sidekicks, henchmen, discarded love interests. Each of these characters is a full person with a entire story behind them. Who wouldn't want to explore that?   Whenever I was young, I would watch Alice in Wonderland and I remember thinking "Why is that lady so mad?"   The idea for the book came to me as I was driving one day - I thought, "I wonder what the Queen of Hearts' story is."  Later I went home and began researching, I stumbled across a quote from Lewis Carroll where he referred to her as "An embodiment of blind fury". That description was so tempting, I knew then that I wanted to write her story, and when I did, it would have to be a very dark tale about the relationship between love and anger.

In the preface of the book you quote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Was it a love for Lewis Carroll's book that led you to write about Dinah?

While I do love Alice in Wonderland, I would say that my complete fall into that world happened when I was writing the book.  Now I'm deep into the mythos of that world and that book, which was so wonderful to revisit as an adult as I prepared to write Queen.

Some of the imagery in the book reminds me of watching the Disney movie Alice in Wonderland as a child, especially during the Royal Croquet Tournament. Did the movie play any role in the development of your story?

That was a strange area for me - did I even consider the movie when I was writing the book, especially considering how vastly different they are? In the end I decided to embrace both the political satire that is Carroll's book and the whimsy of the Disney movie and the culture that has come with that film.

Are any of the experiences in the book Dinah and Wardley have that are based on you or someone you know?

I would have to say NO, but I have played croquet once, so that's something we have in common.  Oh, and I also like tea and tarts.

I love how you developed Charles as a character. Can you tell us a little more about him?

The Mad Hatter was a tricky character to adapt. I'm glad you loved Charles, I loved him too!  I felt like my Wonderland was so dark and twisted that I wanted someone who was almost above that entire world and yet a part of it, and that's Charles. He's twisted and beautiful and innocent. I also wanted Dinah to have someone that she could love purely, without gain, and that is Charles.

Who is your favorite character in Wonderland? Why?

Of course I love angry little Dinah above all else, but if I had to pick another character I would say that Cheshire is my favorite character. I LOVE writing his scenes, and I don't think it's a spoiler to say that you haven't seen the last of him.

Who is your least favorite character in your new book? Why?

Nanda and Palma are pretty terrible. I feel like they are the cultural equivalent of those crazy women you see on Bravo reality shows.

If you could visit anywhere in Wonderland, where would you go?

Probably the Twisted Wood or the Ninth Sea, at least in this book. Ask me in a few books and I might have a different answer. :)

Is there anything specific you want your readers to know about the Queen of Hearts?

I think I would want them to come in with a very open mind and know that the Wonderland they are about to experience is nothing like the Wonderland that they know, and yet it's exactly the Wonderland they know.  That or that they are about to read a story about a villain and not an adorably clumsy princess.

What was the hardest part about writing your new book?

Well, my life has changed a lot since I wrote Queen: I now have a child, and so amount of time that I have to write has taken a nosedive.  I'm learning to really prioritize my time and to plunge quicker into my fantasy worlds.  However, in some ways, I think that I am writing better with less time since every minute counts.

What is your favorite motivational quote? How has it helped you?

For writing, I really have two favorite quotes. The first is "Hold the vision, trust the process."  I repeat this to myself daily, even when it feels like I am writing really slow.  The other is by Stephen King: "If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all else: read a lot and write a lot."

Who is your favorite author? What do you love about their work?

Audrey Niffenegger is probably my favorite current writer.  Her books and work are just creative, inspired and bold. She doesn't write for a certain audience, she writes for the story, and she has inspired me to stick to plot line and characters arcs that at times felt a bit reckless.  Her books encourage me to take risks.  Her Fearful Symmetry and The Time Traveler's Wife are works of art.

What projects are you working on right now Colleen? Can you give us a sneak peek?

Yes! Currently I am working on another YA series called Wendy Darling, a Peter Pan retelling!   I can tell you that writing Wendy has been a completely different experience than writing The Queen of Hearts. One is a stick of dynamite and the other is a calm sea.   Wendy's story is important because I think there are so many important ideas floating around Neverlandregarding women and their place in that world. We will touch on some interesting things there:  memory, abuse, faith and family.

Here is a sneak peek:

"The arms tightened and for a moment, Wendy was confused at how the voices making such melodic, enchanting sounds could feel so strong, like a skin made of stone. The voice rose several octaves just before she was yanked underwater without warning.  Her arms flailed above her, suddenly terrified, reaching, reaching back for the sky that was rapidly becoming smaller. The water around her had become luminescent, lighting up from within itself, a thousand diamonds floating in her vision. The arms stayed strong around her waist, pulling, pulling and the song was back, so lulling. the waves cradling her under their crushing power. Wendy felt her body stop fighting the water that was flowing into her mouth, her lungs. She had resigned herself to the underwater song, the arms around her waist pulling her lower and lower into the shimmery darkness when she heard a strange whistling sound, and a shadow passed overhead...

Peter sliced through the water like a bird of prey."

What does the future hold for you?

Well, in the immediate future I will be working on Wendy Darling and the final novel of the Elly in Bloom series.  After that, I have no plans, but I am definitely tossing ideas around for my next YA fantasy series and perhaps a stand alone mystery novel.

Is there anything you are dying to tell your readers?

Just to thank them for taking the time to read Queen of Hearts, and any book for that matter. I feel that being a reader is a rare talent in this day and age, and every reader deserves applaud for keeping their minds and hearts open to imagination of others.  When a reader opens one of my books, they have given me a key to their mind, and I promise, as a writer, that I will do my best to fill it with wonder.

Roger Love Singing Academy Review

One of the amazing things about being a blogger is the fabulous opportunities that are presented to you.  Tomoson is a site that is all about giving away FREE products to test, review, and sometimes giveaway.

This opportunity I couldn't pass up.  I simply love to sing! Music has always been a part of my life. I enjoy many different genre's of music thanks to my parents who exposed me to a variety of music throughout my childhood. Though I never intend to be a famous singer, I thoroughly enjoy it. I have noticed a dramatic difference in how I sing since starting this program.  Who would say no to a better singing voice?

Thank you Tomoson for giving me an opportunity to take the Roger Love Singing Academy

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Roger Love is your voice coach.  He takes you through the basics, each lesson building on the previous one.  First you start with breathing.  It's amazing learning how to breathe correctly! Are you a diaphragmatic breather? If you don't know find out. You should know not only for a good singing voice but also for better health.

Then Roger helps you locate and learn how to control your larynx.  This one was an eye opener for me, I didn't realize I had control over it. I thought that the larynx was one of those parts that just did it's own thing. But no, Roger shows you that you can in fact control your larynx and understand how your vocal chords work. Amazing!

Roger has put together daily exercises that will help you develop and warm up your singing voice through all three of your voices: chest, middle, and head. Though you may feel a little silly, you will certainly notice a difference as you practice.

Each lesson is given once per week and you can go back and access it as many times as you like. You can practice in the comfort of your own home with the one on one video tutorials with the ability to pause, rewind, and repeat as desired! There are three class offerings: Basic (5 weeks), Intermediate (10 weeks), and Advanced (14 weeks).

I am participating in the 10 week Intermediate program.  The Singing Academy steps you through different techniques helping you find and develop your Chest, Middle, and Head voices.  In addition, it walks you through developing vibrato and sustains, acting out a song and gives great tips for singing in different genres: rock, pop, country, R&B/gospel, and musical theater.

As you advance through your lessons you will find Love Notes which are an incredible way to learn the secrets of superstar performances.  Each week not only will your voice improve, but your confidence will also.

In addition to helping with your voice control, Roger also gives help with Diet Do's and Don'ts, Tips to overcome stage fright, how to audition, and advice to help you never loose your singing voice again.

Roger Love's Singing Academy has already helped thousands of people, including stars like Anthony Robbins, Jeff Bridges, John Mayer, and Selena Gomez find their voice and learn how to effectively communicate.  Whether you are a professional singer, aspiring professional, a member of a choir, or simply just want to hear how great your voice can be, Roger Love's Singing Academy can help you!

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Transformers Construct Bots

So what are are the components of the perfect boy toy.  For my boys the perfect toy has moving parts, invites creativity and open ended play.  Fun involves taking things apart and putting them back together or changing them into something else.  It has to have bright colors and look "cool". Enter, Transformers Construct Bots.

My boys love getting things in the mail, especially things that they get to play with.  Imagine their delight when I opened up my BzzAgent package with Transformer's inside, for them!

I had to laugh at my oldest son, who asked where the package came from.  When I let him know that I the package came for FREE from my blog he was ecstatic! "Can you get more for free Mom?" He asked immediately. So as long as my blogging gets free stuff for my kids apparently they are ok with it! LOL

And it's amazing how quickly I can get my kids moving on a school morning when there is something fun waiting for them in the front room!

I really liked how each transformer came in it's own case.  So all the little pieces and parts had somewhere to go.  There are a lot of extra weapons (which was a huge plus for my boys, they liked being able to switch the weapons and make new combinations) so it was great to have a spot for them.

Kiddo #1 chose Megatron the Deceptacon, and Kiddo #2 picked the Autobot Optimus Prime.

Just like with Lego's each robot came with the pieces in individually wrapped packages and it's own set of instructions with step by step pictures.  There aren't really written instructions, which didn't slow down kiddo #2 at all, but might have been a little helpful for slower Mom trying to help younger brother...

But kiddo #2 was still happy to help build too.  Since he is only 6 it was a little too hard for him to do all alone, but kiddo #1 who is 9 had no problem building the robot all by himself.

Step 1 is completed! The robots are done.  But the fun is just beginning.  That's right these robots are transformers, so we get to see what they look like transformed into their vehicles too!

If that's not a face only a Mother could love I don't know what is!

The little cannon on top, yes it really shoots! Did I tell you my boys thought these were the coolest toy ever?

If you have purchased/owned any of the more complicated transformers before, these are very similar.  They aren't the easiest to transform, but it does get easier with practice.  After looking over the instructions intently you can figure out which little part goes where to make it work.  And after going through the motions two or three times the boys got it figured out and could go back and forth without help.

The pieces do come apart, like Lego's if pulled/pushed too hard, but it's no big deal because they snap right back into place.  We only had one party fail on Megatron, he was a little harder to transform than Optimus Prime, but he eventually went back into place.

In the words of Kiddo #1, "They're epic! Can you get some more free ones?"
Kiddo #2, "Yeah Mom, I love them!"

There ya go, I guess I know what to do for birthday's this year!  I hope your kiddos enjoy these as much as mine did! I wish every morning went as nicely as this one did...
